Montezuma, Costa Rica
Usually I find sitting on the beach staring at waves to be boring. But occasionally it's just what the doctor ordered.
Montezuma is a small beach town on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. The town itself has a handful of hotels, bars, gift shops, and shirtless rastas pushing marijuana. The surrounding area is home to estates of the megafamous - Tom Brady and Leonardo DiCaprio among them. It's a pretty place with clean beaches, gregarious monkeys, and lizards of all shapes and sizes.
I had been planning on staying at a hostel in Montezuma, but I was so fried from a spree of drinking and gambling that I couldn't handle all the energetic people. My first night in Montezuma I listened to a young American from my hostel explaining icing (hiding Smirnoff ice in couches and whatnot) to a crowd of smiling intoxicated young Europeans. The second night I switched to a hotel on the beach.
For the next few days I read, wrote, and walked along the beach. I found a turtle preservation project that every day at dusk was releasing hundreds of baby turtles into the ocean. I woke up at 5am to watch the sun rise on the Gulf of Nicoya.
Generally speaking, I didn't do a whole lot except for chill the fuck out. I cleared my head and made some necessary decisions.
I had been waiting in Costa Rica for some replacement bank cards to arrive in the mail, and also to see where my relationship with a woman I had started dating there would go. In Montezuma I chose a day to leave Costa Rica. One more weekend in San José and then I would be off.
