I wanted to go see the honky tonk performers play their own original music but I settled for a 80s/90s tribute show in East Nashville that was some kind of fundraiser.
The organizer was Tyson Leslie who is apparently a local legend and knows basically all the musicians in Nashville. Since everyone in Nashville is a professional musician I guess he's probably mayor. I recognized him as the guest guitar player on Thunderstruck at a honky tonk I visited the previous night.
This show was a million different musicians playing mashed up together playing mostly deep cuts from 80s and 90s bands. The drummer from Hank Jr. played a Rush song I didn't know. Some country singer headlined a lineup that did Soundgarden's early "Slaves and Bulldozers."
The bassist from Bon Jovi was probably the most famous performer but also the least impressive. Most of the musicians tore it up. Ballroom Blitz and Kill the King were awesome. A couple guys from the Trans Siberian Orchestra in town for a show did an impromptu White Snake cover with some other musicians who Tyson just called up to the stage because he knew they'd know it.
The last notes I took:
"Last band was as heavy as advertised. Felt punkish and I got excited and entered the pit. A nice old man even held my beer for it. I'm all fucked up now though and I blame dancing. I have to work tomorrow!"
